Do you have a passion for animals and aquatics, and enjoy working in a role that’s varied, hands-on, and customer focused?

We’re looking for a dedicated Aquarium & Pet Department Assistant to join our friendly team, helping to care for our animals, maintain high welfare standards, and ensure customers receive exceptional service and advice.

About the Role

As an Aquarium & Pet Department Assistant, you’ll be a key part of the day-to-day running of our animal and aquatics department. Your work will include:

  • Animal Care & Husbandry – Feeding, cleaning, and maintaining the health and wellbeing of our fish, small animals, and birds. Monitoring their condition daily, spotting signs of illness, and reporting concerns to senior staff.
  • Aquarium & Enclosure Maintenance – Cleaning tanks, cages, and aviaries; checking water quality and filtration systems; ensuring animals are housed in safe, suitable environments.
  • Customer Service & Advice – Greeting customers, answering questions, and offering knowledgeable, honest advice on pet care, nutrition, and suitable products.
  • Sales Support – Assisting with restocking, pricing, and merchandising; setting up attractive and informative product displays.
  • Store Layout & Maintenance – Helping keep the department clean, organised, and safe for both animals and customers.
  • Health & Safety Compliance – Following all welfare, handling, and health & safety procedures to maintain the highest standards.
  • Learning & Development – Taking part in regular in-house training sessions to expand your knowledge on animal care and products.

What We’re Looking For

  • A genuine passion for animals, aquatics, and pet care.
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to speak with customers.
  • The ability to work well both as part of a team and independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow welfare guidelines precisely.
  • Physical fitness – the role will involve manual work, including lifting feed bags, carrying water, and cleaning enclosures.
  • Previous animal care experience is a plus, but not essential – full training will be given.

What We Offer

  • Full in-house training on all aspects of fish, small animal, and bird care.
  • Staff discount on products.
  • Staff uniform provided.
  • Employee pension scheme.
  • A friendly, supportive team environment where your contribution is valued.
  • Opportunities to expand your skills and progress within the company.
